This SBU Covers the usage and safety practices needed for the use of the Drill Presses, Grinders, Sanders, and Bandsaws of both the Wood and Metal Shops.

This Class is a prerequisite for taking the advanced metal and woods classes.

In this Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you will learn how to set up an oxy-acetylene torch to weld and cut steel. Imagine the possibilities for creating anything you want with steel and this amazing torch!

 

For your safety, long pants and long sleeved shirt in natural fibers are required in the Fabrication Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

TIG Welding SBU, 2hrs, MTIG101

 

In this Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you will learn how to use a basic TIG welding equipment setup to create a quality weld bead on mild steel under 1/8" thick.

Welding is the process of fusing materials together. "TIG" stands for "Tungsten Inert Gas." Other names for TIG include Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Heliarc. TIG welding can be used for a wide variety of different metals, and can produce a very pure, precise, and attractive weld with extensive practice. 

For your safety, long pants and long sleeved shirt in natural fibers are required in the Fabrication Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

TIG Welding 2, 2hrs, MTIG102

 

After completing the TIG Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, students can try their skills in a different material. Aluminum has characteristics that require specific equipment setup, metal preparation and torch operation. Students will practice specific joints and improve weld bead quality under guidance of an instructor. Lap, butt, corner, and fillet welds will all be discussed and individual students will perform at their own rates. Emphasis will be placed on visual inspection of welds and heat zone theory, giving students a better understanding of what a quality weld joint really looks like.

 

Class Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete the TIG Welding SBU in order to take this class. If it has been at least 9 months since you took the TIG SBU and have not used the machine since, you must re-take the TIG SBU, which is offered at half price if you successfully passed the first TIG SBU. Anyone can re-take any SBU at TechShop that they have previously taken and passed for half price. Please sign up with the front desk in order to ensure this special price.

MIG Welding SBU, 2hrs, MIG103

In this Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you will learn how to use a basic MIG welding equipment setup with solid wire and shielding gas to create a quality weld bead on mild steel under 1/4" thick. 

Welding is the process of fusing materials together. "MIG" stands for "Metal Inert Gas". Other names for MIG include Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Wire Feed welding. MIG welding is a semi-automatic method of welding, using a solid wire and shielding gas. With some equipment changes, MIG welding can be used for a small variety of different metals, such as Stainless Steel and Aluminum. Many MIG welding machines can also run a tubular, flux cored wire that does not require a shielding gas, which is called Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). 

For your safety, long pants and long sleeved shirt in natural fibers are required in the Fabrication Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

Finishing

 

Powder Coating and Bead Blasting SBU, 1.5hrs, MPC104

In this class you will learn how to powder coat metal objects. You will learn how to prep the parts to be powder coated with our bead blasting cabinet.

 

Powder Coating is a process for coating metal with a baked on coating similar to plastic. It uses high voltage to charge microscopic particles to evenly coat the item being powder coated. It is then baked in an oven at a specific temperature for a set length of time to complete the process.

For this class bring a small metal object you want to powder coat. It must be able to withstand 375F. Most metals are fine, aluminum, steel, brass, stainless, uranium, etc...

 

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

Concepts of CNC, SWCNC101

This is the first in our CNC Machining Series of classes. Learn the basics of CNC (computer numerical control) devices. This seminar will present the whole CNC process, from CAD (computer aided design) to CAM (computer aided machining) to CUT (cutting your part). Learn the essentials of calculating Feeds & Speeds. Understand the uses and differences between Climb cutting and Conventional cutting.


 

Laser Cutting and Engraving SBU, 2hrs, MLASER101

Would you like to be able to cut intricate designs or engrave images at the press of a button? You can do it in minutes in wood, most plastics, and paper with a laser cutter! In this Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you will learn how to use TechShop's Epilog Helix computer-controlled 45-watt CO2 laser to cut, etch and engrave designs in a variety of materials up to 24" x 18" by 3/8" thick including plastics, woods, paper and cardboard, fabric, leather, and even chocolate! Produce your wildest dreams with this widely applicable tool. You'll never know how you lived without it.

Laser Engraver Rotary Attachment SBU, 1hr, MLASER102 

Want to etch wine glasses, bottles, flashlights, drumsticks and other cylindrical objects with your own images, text, and logos? Take this class and learn how to use the Epilog Helix laser cutter's Rotary Attachment. You'll also learn more Helix machine features and related lasing techniques to enhance your lasing results that can be applied to rotary as well as flatbed lasing. Bring a glass or clean bottle to etch and take home. 

Class Prerequisite: You MUST take and pass the TechShop Laser Cutting and Etching SBU class before taking this class.

In this class you will learn the basics of running a standard metal turning lathe. You will learn how to face, turn, and part.

Class Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete the Measurement class or have instructor approval.

Wood Shop Layout Tools and Measurement, Clamping and Gluing, WMEAS104, 2hrs, $60

In this class you will learn how to lay out and measure to make accurate projects in the wood shop. Also focuses on gluing and clamping techniques.

Beginning Wood Shop Complete, WSC104, 10wks, $200

 

This class is the combination of the Woods SBUs 1 and 2, Layout and Measurement, and Hand Power Tools all rolled into one. It is taught one a week for 3 hrs over a 10 week period. In this class you will learn how to use the sanders, scroll saw, band saw, drum sander, table saws, radial arm saw, planers, and jointers. You will also learn how to use the hand power tools like sanders and routers as well as how to lay out and measure wood.

The first half of the class is composed of two projects. A push stick and a foot stool. Through these two projects you will learn how to use the machines mentioned above safely. Once you have completed these two projects you are free to use this equipment to build projects of your choice.

This is the best class for beginning wood workers and non-members as it will give you some shop time to work on your projects.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

Advanced Wood Shop: Patternmaking, 10wks, WPM201

In this class you will learn how to make patterns that are use to create molds to cast parts in our foundry.

Class Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete both Woods SBUs, Woods Measurement, and Hand Power Tools before taking this class plus the layout and measurement class.

Thursdays, starting April 2nd, 6 to 9pm, $300 first session, materials extra.

Advanced Wood Shop: Wood Lathe SBU, 3hrs, WTURN202

In this class you will learn how to safely operate the wood and patternmaking lathes in our wood shop. You can make decorative columns, banisters, spindles, lamps, bowls etc. On the large patternmaking lathes you can turn objects to 2 1/2 feet in diameter and 8 feet long.

Class Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete both Woods SBUs before taking this class.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use the wood lathes for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!


 

Advanced Wood Shop: Advanced Wood Lathe, 6wks, WADTURN301, $200

In this class you will hone you skills and techniques on the wood and patternmaking lathes in our wood shop. On the large patternmaking lathes you can turn objects to 2 1/2 feet in diameter and 8 feet long.

Class Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete both Wood Lathe SBU before taking this class.

Advanced Wood Shop: Metal Spinning SBU, 3hrs, WSPIN301

Learn how to create the forms to spin metal on the lathe to make objects like bowls.

Class Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete both Woods SBUs, Layout Tools and Measurement, and Patternmaking before taking this class.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use the wood lathes for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!


 

Advanced Wood Shop: Cabinet Making and Furniture, WCBNFUR203

In this class you will learn the techniques to make furniture and cabinetry. The focus of the class is on joinery where you will lear to make mchine and hand dovetails, rabbets, dados, mortise and tenons, and finger joints.

Class Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete both Woods SBUs before taking this class.

Marquetry is the craft of covering a structural carcass with pieces of veneer forming decorative patterns, designs or pictures.

Learn how to carve and sculpt wood. Learn to carve reliefs, 3-D and charactures. Carve your own carousel horse!

Learn how to make planes, trains, and automobiles all out of wood. Build a rocking horse!
